Sal Stewart Has Turned “Rookie of the Year” Into a Serious Cincinnati Campaign

Power, run production, an All-Star selection and one of the tightest award races in baseball have pushed Sal Stewart from top prospect to legitimate National League Rookie of the Year contender.

The phrase printed across the design is simple: Sal Stewart for Rookie of the Year. The baseball argument behind it is anything but empty campaign language.

Stewart entered 2026 with prospect expectations after a promising September arrival the previous season. Within weeks, he looked less like a young player simply trying to survive Major League pitching and more like one of Cincinnati’s central offensive pieces.

A Rookie Season That Started Fast

Stewart did not need months to create national attention. In late March, he became the youngest player since at least 1900 to reach base three or more times in each of his team’s first four games. He earned National League Player of the Week honors almost immediately.

April delivered even more. Stewart became NL Rookie of the Month while continuing to show the advanced strike-zone understanding that had made him one of Cincinnati’s most respected hitting prospects.

The power followed. Against San Francisco in April, he hit two three-run homers in the first two innings of one game, producing six RBI before many fans had settled fully into the night. In June at Yankee Stadium, he tied that career-high six-RBI mark again.

Then the Rookie of the Year Race Became Nearly Perfectly Even

By August, this was no longer a one-player award conversation. MLB.com’s August Rookie of the Year poll produced an extraordinary result: Stewart and St. Louis Cardinals rookie JJ Wetherholt each received 144 voting points.

Wetherholt held a slight first-place-vote edge, but Stewart had closed the gap after a huge July in which he hit seven home runs and posted a .510 slugging percentage.

At that stage of the race, Stewart led National League rookies with 24 home runs and 85 RBI. His production has continued, with MLB’s more recent numbers showing 26 home runs and 91 RBI, the latter leading the National League overall at the time of the latest player-page update.

This is what makes the shirt timely rather than hypothetical: “Sal Stewart for Rookie of the Year” reflects a real award race in which MLB’s own expert poll had Stewart tied for first.

Why Stewart’s Case Is So Easy for Fans to Understand

Rookie award arguments can become complicated when they depend heavily on defensive metrics, positional adjustments or small samples. Stewart’s campaign has a much simpler front door: production.

He drives in runs. He hits for power. He has delivered in large venues. He made the All-Star team. And he has done it at 22 years old while playing meaningful baseball for Cincinnati.

There have been slumps, which actually makes the season more convincing as a full campaign. After his scorching start, Stewart went through his first prolonged downturn in May. He came out of it rather than disappearing, delivering major performances again in June and July.

Reading the Rookie Campaign Artwork

The design uses Cincinnati red as the emotional center. Stewart is treated less like a generic player portrait and more like the subject of an election-style sports campaign: his name, the ROY message and the player image all compete for attention in a deliberately direct hierarchy.

That works because the shirt does not require a long explanation. Someone seeing it at Great American Ball Park can understand the message in one glance: Cincinnati has a candidate, and the campaign is active.
