The Heisman Campaign Got Hard: Now Julian Sayin Has to Answer
Then came Austin. Ohio State led Texas 23–3 entering the fourth quarter on September 12 and left with a 24–23 loss. Sayin finished with 278 passing yards and a touchdown, but his final throw was intercepted as the Buckeyes tried to manufacture one last possession after Texas completed the largest fourth-quarter comeback ever against an AP No. 1 team.
That swing is what makes Sayin’s Heisman story interesting now. A campaign graphic with three enormous HEISMAN lines can no longer be read as easy preseason hype. No. 10 actually has something to recover from.
Sayin Entered 2026 With a Résumé, Not Just Hype
This was never a random trophy projection. During his first full year as Ohio State’s starter, Sayin threw for 3,610 yards and 32 touchdowns while completing 77.0 percent of his passes. That completion rate led the nation, broke Ohio State’s single-season record and established a new Big Ten mark.
Ohio State’s official player profile lists him as a 2025 Heisman finalist and a 2026 watch-list selection for the Maxwell, Walter Camp, Davey O’Brien, Manning and Johnny Unitas Golden Arm awards. The Buckeyes also made him a captain.
That background matters because it changes the meaning of “Heisman Hopeful.” Sayin is not trying to jump from anonymity into the race. He is trying to finish a story he already started.
Texas Changed the Race Without Ending It
The loss at Texas did real damage to the mood around Ohio State. The Buckeyes fell from No. 1 to No. 6 in the AP poll, and a Heisman race that had already become crowded suddenly gave Sayin less room for ordinary performances.
But the context matters. Ohio State did not lose because Sayin collapsed for four quarters. The Buckeyes controlled most of the game before the entire team failed to close a 20-point fourth-quarter lead. Sayin still threw for 278 yards in one of college football’s largest early-season stages.
That distinction is why the campaign remains alive. At Ohio State, however, “alive” is not enough. Kent State comes next, followed by the portion of the schedule where Sayin has to turn clean box scores into the larger wins that voters remember in November.
The Design Looks Louder Than Sayin’s Public Persona
That contrast gives the artwork its visual tension. Sayin is placed in the center of three stacked HEISMAN lines, wearing scarlet No. 10 with the football raised above his shoulder. The lettering is oversized, repetitive and campaign-like — almost deliberately louder than the quarterback himself.
Scarlet gives the piece immediate Columbus identity, while the gray and white typography prevents the repeated wording from becoming a single block of red. Sayin cuts diagonally through the rectangular field of type, which makes the player look as if he is moving through the campaign rather than posing beside it.
The Internet Already Treats Every Sayin Performance Like a Ballot Update
That was obvious after Week 1. PFF College immediately packaged Sayin’s Ball State line — 21 completions on 25 attempts, 320 passing yards and four total touchdowns — like a Heisman tracker. College football social media does this with every major candidate now: statistics become campaign graphics before players have even finished removing their pads.
The Texas loss produced the opposite side of the same machine. One week after “Heisman campaign” language filled feeds, the conversation shifted toward Ohio State’s collapse. For a quarterback chasing the trophy, both reactions are part of the job.
The Next Phase Is About Response, Not Projection
Sayin’s greatest advantage is that he does not have to build credibility from nothing. His 2025 season already established elite accuracy, high-end production and a national award résumé. His disadvantage is that voters now expect those qualities every week.
