Air Mesty Took Flight — and Oklahoma State Finally Had Its Saturday Again

A year after Oregon beat Oklahoma State 69–3, Drew Mestemaker produced 426 yards of offense, went airborne for the go-ahead touchdown and helped the Cowboys stun No. 6 Oregon 39–31 in Stillwater.

Revenge stories are usually cleaner in hindsight than they feel while they are happening. Oklahoma State’s September 12 afternoon against Oregon was chaotic almost immediately.

Drew Mestemaker threw an early interception that Oregon returned 96 yards for a touchdown. The Cowboys had entered the afternoon carrying a 21-game losing streak against FBS opponents. Their previous season had ended 1–11. One year earlier, Oregon had beaten them 69–3.

Every piece of recent history suggested that another difficult afternoon was possible.

Mestemaker responded by producing the type of quarterback performance capable of rewriting all of it at once.

“Air Mesty” was not invented because a quarterback had a good game. It was invented because the photograph looked like he had temporarily stopped obeying gravity.

The Flying Touchdown Was the Game’s Perfect Photograph

Oregon had just reclaimed a 31–30 lead early in the fourth quarter when Oklahoma State began a 12-play, 75-yard response.

Facing third down from the Oregon 10, Mestemaker scrambled upfield. He accelerated toward the goal line, launched himself over one defender and absorbed another hit while suspended in the air. The contact rotated his body, but the football stayed secured as he crossed the plane.

Touchdown.

Oklahoma State led 36–31 with 10:21 remaining and never trailed again.

The Play Worked Because the Entire Performance Was Already Wild

The leap did not arrive as an isolated trick. Mestemaker had announced his running threat on Oklahoma State’s first offensive play with a 75-yard run, the longest Power Four quarterback rush of the young season at that point.

Through the air, he completed 26 passes for 317 yards and two touchdowns. Wyatt Young caught a 52-yard score. On the ground, Mestemaker finished with 109 yards, making him the first Oklahoma State quarterback since the 2022 Fiesta Bowl to cross the 100-yard rushing mark.

He ended the afternoon with 426 yards of total offense.

That is why the postgame awards arrived so quickly. The Big 12 named him Offensive Player of the Week. The Manning Award selected him as a Star of the Week. The Davey O’Brien Award included him in its Great 8. The Burlsworth Trophy named him its Walk-On of the Week.

Two Graphics, Two Different Ways to Remember One Upset

“Air Mesty” and “Zesty for Mesty” come from the same game but do different cultural jobs.

Design Language

Air Mesty behaves like a sports photograph transformed into memorabilia: orange No. 17 floating above grayscale opposition, signature treatment and very little headline copy. Zesty for Mesty is louder and more fan-driven, using Oklahoma State orange and player wordplay to turn one afternoon into a broader quarterback identity.

The Official Social Post Made the Play Instant Internet Material

Oklahoma State did not over-explain the moment online. The team posted the airborne photograph with a short caption built around the quarterback’s name. That restraint helped the frame travel because the image needed almost no context.

The phrase “Air Mesty” came naturally afterward because fans were already staring at a quarterback who looked airborne rather than merely running. It is the rare nickname concept where the visual proof arrives before anyone explains the joke.

The Upset Meant More Because of 2025

Oklahoma State’s win would have been significant under any circumstances. The previous year made it emotional.

The Cowboys had gone 1–11 and changed coaches. Their 21-game losing streak against FBS opponents had become part of the program’s daily context. Oregon entered Stillwater ranked sixth after humiliating Oklahoma State 69–3 in Eugene the previous season.

Then the Cowboys generated 554 yards, controlled more than 36 minutes of possession and beat the Ducks by eight.

That is why the field storm mattered. It was not simply celebration of one ranked upset. It was release.

The Oklahoma State Cowboys collection can now document the visual language that came out of that afternoon, while the broader NCAA collection tracks a Week 2 in which several highly ranked programs were shaken. More No. 17 designs can be found through the Drew Mestemaker product archive.
