Atlanta Basketball / State Farm Arena / 2026–27

Opening Night Belonged to Harry the Hawk.

Atlanta’s 2026–27 home opener came with live music, a citywide mascot-shirt celebration and a familiar red-feathered personality at the center of it all.

ATLANTA / 2026–27 OCTOBER 24 HARRY THE HAWK / NO. 1

On October 24, 2026, the Atlanta Hawks returned to State Farm Arena for their first home game of the new NBA season. The Houston Rockets were the visitors, but a different personality had already become part of the night’s identity: Harry the Hawk.

The Hawks organized their Opening Night celebration around more than the game itself. Every attendee received a special black Harry the Hawk T-shirt courtesy of State Farm, while another 1,200 shirts were distributed through community Good Neighbor Clubs before the event.

This was an unusual moment for a mascot to occupy the center of a season-opening campaign. Instead of a star-player photograph carrying all the visual attention, Atlanta leaned into the character who has spent years entertaining basketball crowds, interacting with families and giving home games their own personality.

Three days later, the design remains a reminder that Opening Night is an event with its own culture — not simply the first home result in the standings.

Atlanta Built Opening Night Around Its Own Culture

The 2026–27 Hawks arrived with renewed expectations. Atlanta had won 46 games the previous season, its most since 2015–16, and entered the new campaign after a Southeast Division title and Eastern Conference playoff appearance.

The organization used Opening Night to reflect the broader city’s entertainment identity. Atlanta rapper Belly Gang Kushington performed at halftime, while singer Keri Hilson delivered the national anthem.

The event also featured Samuel Henderson, the young bird-calling performer who had become a recognizable part of the Hawks’ viral 2026–27 schedule-release campaign. His appearance brought another piece of online Atlanta basketball culture into the arena.

City Identity Keri Hilson sang the national anthem as Atlanta opened at home.
Fan Culture Every attendee received a special Harry the Hawk Opening Night shirt.

Together, those elements transformed the occasion into a specifically Atlanta celebration. Basketball provided the schedule, but music, mascot culture and community participation created the atmosphere.

Why Harry the Hawk Was the Perfect Face of the Night

Harry has a unique position within Hawks culture. Players change, lineups evolve and franchises enter new competitive phases, but the mascot remains a consistent presence.

The bright red feathers, oversized yellow beak, black Hawks jersey and familiar No. 1 create a visual identity that needs little explanation to regular Atlanta basketball spectators.

At live games, mascots also have an unusual job. They occupy the space between basketball action: timeouts, breaks, fan interactions and crowd-participation moments. They help maintain the rhythm of an event when the ball isn’t moving.

Opening Night is about the return of the team. Harry represents the return of the entire arena experience.

The Result Wasn’t the Whole Story

On the court, Houston defeated Atlanta 121–114. Kevin Durant scored 22 points for the Rockets, while Reed Sheppard and Tari Eason added 19 points apiece.

Atlanta made a late push after trailing by as many as 20. Jalen Johnson finished with 26 points and 16 assists, but the Hawks couldn’t complete the comeback.

The result mattered to the standings. The experience mattered for different reasons. Fans returned to their home arena, watched the entertainment program and joined the season-opening celebration.

A mascot-centered graphic doesn’t attempt to rewrite the score. It records the atmosphere around the start of a new season.

Five Harrys, One Opening Night Graphic

The Atlanta Hawks Opening Night Shirt approaches the event through a layered mascot collage rather than a conventional player-focused sports design.

Giant distressed red lettering announces “OPENING NIGHT” above a collection of Harry the Hawk illustrations. The central figure raises both arms, while the additional poses introduce different expressions and perspectives.

Small yellow 26 and 27 numerals identify the season. The black background allows the mascot’s red feathers and golden beak to stand out, while gray distressed elements give the graphic the appearance of an arena poster.

One version of Harry holds a basketball. Another is seen from behind, with HARRY and the number 1 visible on the jersey. A close-up portrait emphasizes the mascot’s recognizable face, while a smaller figure adds motion to the layout.

The result has the energy of older basketball event posters, but with the high-contrast typography of contemporary sports graphics.

It also stands apart from the official Opening Night giveaway. The Ellie Shirt design is its own illustrated tribute to the event, not a claim to reproduce the State Farm promotional shirt.

Why Atlanta’s Official Mascot Giveaway Mattered

Before the game, the Hawks announced that all fans in attendance would receive Harry the Hawk shirts. The organization also distributed 1,200 additional shirts to local community clubs.

This mattered because it connected the mascot to the opening-night experience outside the arena. The giveaway turned Harry into a shared visual theme for the night.

The Beginning of a New Hawks Season

Atlanta entered 2026–27 with several recognizable contributors, including Jalen Johnson, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Dyson Daniels and Onyeka Okongwu.

The season promises a mixture of developing expectations, established personalities and a fan community that has its own relationship with the team.

Harry the Hawk remains a constant across those changing narratives. His presence makes opening night feel familiar even when the roster and circumstances are new.

The Atlanta Hawks collection reflects those different aspects of fandom through player graphics, mascot imagery and game-night themes. The broader NBA collection connects Atlanta’s season-opening culture with other team moments across the league.
