The Mendoza–Haynes ’26 Shirt presents two of Georgia Tech’s most important newcomers like names on a campaign ticket. It is not a political message. Who are Mendoza and Haynes?

The first name is Alberto Mendoza, not his older brother Fernando. Alberto transferred to Georgia Tech after spending two seasons at Indiana, where he served as the primary backup while the Hoosiers compiled a 26–2 record, won the 2025 Big Ten championship and captured the College Football Playoff national title.

Mendoza completed 18 of 24 passes for 286 yards, five touchdowns and one interception in nine appearances during the 2025 season. He also rushed for 190 yards and a touchdown, demonstrating the movement skills Georgia Tech needs from the successor to former ACC Player of the Year Haynes King.

The second name is Justice Haynes, the former Alabama and Michigan running back who returned to his home state for his final college season. Haynes attended Blessed Trinity and Buford in Georgia before becoming one of the nation’s most highly regarded running-back recruits.

Despite a foot injury ending his 2025 Michigan season after seven games, Haynes rushed for 857 yards and 10 touchdowns while averaging 7.1 yards per carry. Six of those seven appearances included at least 100 rushing yards.

Spring offered the first preview

Georgia Tech fans received their first public look at the partnership during the White & Gold spring game at Bobby Dodd Stadium on April 18. Mendoza completed 12 of 16 passes for 148 yards and a touchdown, while Haynes carried nine times for 48 yards as Team Swarm defeated Team Wreck ’Em 34–10.

A spring scrimmage cannot predict an entire season, but the performance revealed why the pairing appeals to supporters. Mendoza looked accurate and controlled the offense without forcing unnecessary throws. Haynes supplied decisive downhill movement and the possibility of turning a clean running lane into an explosive gain.

Why the offense needs both players

Georgia Tech lost significant production after its 9–4 campaign in 2025. Mendoza must replace an established quarterback, while Haynes joins a backfield that also includes Malachi Hosley and other capable runners. The shirt simplifies that larger depth chart into the two transfers most likely to shape the offense’s public identity.

The pairing also offers tactical balance. If Haynes forces defenses to commit additional players near the line of scrimmage, Mendoza should see more manageable passing windows. Georgia Tech opens the 2026 season at home against Colorado on September 3 before hosting Tennessee on September 12. The schedule also brings defending ACC champion Duke, Louisville and Wake Forest to Bobby Dodd Stadium.
