Why this is more interesting than his famous 2023 interception
The Baker Mayfield interception was bigger in postseason consequence. It is still one of the defining Lions plays of the decade.
But Week 1 of 2026 may tell more about Barnes as a player.
The Saints game suggested he can pressure, drop, redirect passes, diagnose routes and create turnovers without Detroit needing to substitute him out of obvious passing situations.
If that continues, the Lions are not simply getting another good linebacker season. They are gaining defensive flexibility.
