The Setup Is Bigger Than a Normal Nonconference Game

Both programs arrive 1–0, but their opening weekends could hardly have looked more different.

Michigan survived Western Michigan 13–12 in Ann Arbor. The Wolverines escaped on the final play, keeping the season intact but immediately creating questions about how much cleaner the offense and defense need to look against a top opponent.

Oklahoma opened with no such suspense. The Sooners beat UTEP 51–0, scored on their first eight offensive possessions before finally punting late, and held the Miners to 198 total yards. FOX’s Big Noon Kickoff is also part of the game-day environment. Add championship recognition for Michigan’s men’s basketball team, a Hall of Honor presentation and a pregame parachute jump, and this is being treated as one of the program’s showcase home dates.

The Joke Works Because “Sooner” Has Two Jobs

“Your Dad Wishes He Pulled Out Sooner” is intentionally crude, but structurally it is a very efficient sports joke.

Read normally, “sooner” simply means earlier. Read inside a Michigan–Oklahoma weekend, the last word suddenly points directly at the Sooners. That dual meaning allows the slogan to insult an Oklahoma fan without needing to print “Oklahoma sucks,” a score prediction or an opponent logo.
